What to do if...
If a child becomes a victim, the circumstances involved will determine the steps of action to take, but it is most important to take the necessary action to prevent it from reoccurring and to make sure your child understands that it is not his/her fault that this happened.
It may be necessary to report to your school counselor, Child Protective Services (800-252-5400), or a law enforcement officer. Your child’s school counselor can assist parents or children in making this decision.

- Create opportunities for your child to develop relationships with trustworthy adults
- Emphasize that children have a basic right to body privacy and ownership
- Establish that sexual advances from adults are against the law
- Encourage your child to critically assess situations and to follow his/her inner voice whether or not something is right or wrong
- Encourage your child to communicate abuse or attempted abuse to a trusted adult
- Develop a family plan of action for emergency or crisis situations
