The McKay Foundation/Conroe ISD Partnership
In 2005 Conroe ISD purchased McKay's Legacy DVD and CD for elementary schools in the district. The lessons will be taught by the school counselor and made available to teachers.
The 2006-07 school year marks the 8th Anniversary of the partnership between the Conroe ISD and The McKay Foundation.
The McKay Foundation invited Conroe ISD to participate in a project to teach young children how to protect themselves from harmful acts. In the Fall of 1998, a collaborative process between the CISD schools and parents was developed to involve all CISD campuses with students in Kindergarten through sixth grade to implement this program beginning in February, 1999. The following activities were considered in the implementation of the program:
- Research the area of child abduction, child abuse, and strategies for prevention
- Hold a meeting of school counselors to discuss the available information and to introduce the program.
- Train school counselors
- Select age-appropriate curriculum to teach at each campus/each grade level
- Determine an implementation timeline for holding parent meetings, teaching curriculum
- Inform faculty and staff about the program to get their support
- Plan and facilitate parent meetings to introduce the program and inform them about the campus plan to implement McKay's Legacy.
- Give parents opportunity to exclude child from program.
- Train teachers who may help in the campus presentations
- Teach strategies to children in small group (15-22) settings
- Follow-up by mailing NOWA decals to each family of children involved in the program
- Use school newsletters to remind parents to discuss the strategies to teach young children how to protect themselves from harmful acts and to post the NOWA decals
- Evaluate the implementation of the program, getting input from counselors, students, and parents on each campus
- Plan on how the campus will be involved in McKay's Legacy in the future
